Shenanigan's 2012
Brief history of sponsoring organization:
This internationally award winning community service event is sponsored by the MS Gulf Coast Chapter of Quota International. Chartered in 1976, this all-volunteer group is one of 300 chapters worldwide, serving the deaf, hard of hearing and speech impaired as well as disadvantaged women and children.
The parade is self-sustaining, but each year, Quota raises money for their service projects by raffling off a “Basket of Cheer” – a wagon filled with approximately $500 of libations, assorted cheese and crackers and various entertaining items. Tickets for the raffle can be obtained near the reviewing stand at the parade, or by contacting any Quota member.
History of the Parade
The Shenanigan’s Parade was established in 1985 by the merchants on Courthouse Road in Gulfport. Quota adopted it as a community service project in 1990. This popular tourist event and local favorite celebrates the Irish heritage of so many citizens on the MS Gulf Coast, as well as giving thanks for the many blessings we share in faith, family and friends. In 2006, it was recognized with an Award of Excellence in Community Service by Quota International.
With Hurricane Katrina’s destruction of property and businesses in 2005, the parade route had to be moved to the current downtown Gulfport location.
What is unusual or different about your parade (throws, units, etc?)
More than just a parade, this is a family-oriented party that winds around downtown Gulfport. Lead by the event mascot Mr. Finnegan, parade goers have been treated to unique throws such as cabbages and Irish potatoes. The Grand Marshal, Greg Crapo and Colleen, Shea Williams, will greet the crowds in a horse-drawn carriage, while “St. Patrick” blesses the crowds. Awards are given to the best float and best marching group.
This year is dedicated to the memory of long-time friend of Quota, Vester Wentzel, who portrayed St. Patrick in the parade since 2005. The club voted to rename the best float award the “Vester Wentzel Spirit of Shenanigan’s Award” in his honor. Darrin Hill will assume the role of St. Patrick.
Special guests included in the parade lineup will be Quota International President-Elect, Laura Lahman (QI Coral Springs, FL) and the Quota District 21 Governor, Pat Valentine (QI West Monroe, LA) members of the Junior Quota Club of Gulfport High School, and deaf children from the de l’Epee Deaf Center.
