SOCKS N. POCKETS - A Community Service Literacy Project
Quotarians worldwide support literacy through a variety of local projects. "Socks N. Pockets" was created one week prior to Hurricane Katrina... In fact, we had our first "SNP" night at the Boys & Girls Club on Point Cadet in Biloxi the night before Katrina devastated the Coast. It took us a while to "ramp" back up, but the program is back on track!
Using a character called "Socks", we visit schools, libraries and other children's groups, encouraging children to read! Depending on the group, we mix it with music, songs and games. With some programs, we also introduce sign language to hearing children - and they love it! For our efforts, we were awarded the 2006 International Award of Excellence.
